Tamworth Pigs
We got started with Tamworth pigs a few years ago, after spending a long time searching for the right breed. Tamworths are a rare heritage breed from Ireland. They are known for being thrifty, active foragers, which is exactly what we wanted here on the farm. Just as with our cows, goats, rabbits and the poultry, we are using the Tamworths to help us convert our scrubby land into productive meadows. After a few false starts, we finally got our gilts bred this year via artificial insemination, and our first piglets were born in September 2011. These piglets should be good little weaners for a 4H project, or some wonderful pork in 2012. Stay tuned for more information!
